Fishing Expedition

Guyana offers some great fishing experiences–another way to experience Guyana– a small South American country nestled on the Atlantic Coast east of Venezuela and west of Suriname, it is one of the last unexplored wild places on earth yet offers incredible access into a great variety of pristine habitats.

It is also a land of great contrasts. As you leave behind the coastal city of Georgetown, traveling into the interior, over vast unspoiled forests, and incredible isolated waterfalls. The lure of Guyana is its true wilderness. With amazing wildlife, and many sought-after species easier to see here than in any of the surrounding countries.

This moderately-paced six day/five night fishing trip introduces you to Guyana’s coastal blackwater ecosystem, tanin-rich riverways feeding mangrove forests and hidden rainforest enclaves in the western plateaus of the Guyana Shield. You’ll also experience a stunning flight to Kaieteur Falls, hidden deep in the Precambrian rock formations of western central Guyana.

Day 1: Today is planned as an arrival day. Flights to Georgetown, Guyana. International flights usually arrive after dark at the recently renovated Cheddi Jagan International Airport, located 25 miles south of the capital city, Georgetown. You’ll be met at the airport by a representative from our ground agent (who should be carrying a sign with your name/s and “Cultural Earth Tours” on it). From there you will be transferred by bus directly to our comfortable hotel. The journey will take about an hour (it may vary one way or the other, depending on your flight arrival time). If you cannot arrange a flight that arrives before dinner time, we strongly recommend that you plan to arrive for the tour a day early. Those arriving on late flights tonight are unlikely to arrive to the hotel well after midnight.

Day 2: Today we will take a chartered flight over unspoiled pristine forest to Kaieteur Falls, the world’s highest free-falling waterfall. Though Venezuela’s Angel Falls is greater in total height, its filamentous drop occurs by stages, whereas Kaieteur is a single massive, thundering cascade 100 meters wide, created as the Potaro River makes a sheer drop of 228 meters, nearly five times the height of Niagara Falls. Our flight will continue to Fairview Village airstrip in the heart of Guyana’s beautiful rainforest. You will be greeted by our indigenous Guides who will take you by motorized boat to our Fishing Lodge. The Lodge is situated on the eastern bank of the Essequibo River, surrounded by a pristine jungle full of wildlife. Coleman Weatherproof Tents and Sleeping Cots, set on the banks of this delightful river, under the tree canopy, are available for the Hard-Core Anglers who may want to fish off the riverbank during the night. There is WiFi available for those who may want to utilize this amenity.  Additionally, a satellite phone is always available for use at a nominal cost. You have the chance to spend the rest of day fishing and ending it with a great dinner and a good nights rest, there will be 24 hrs electricity, powered by a photovoltaic (Solar) system.

Days 3 to day 8:  On the third day we will enjoy six days of fishing, getting the chance to catch some of the most exotic fish in Guyana. We also have the chance to see endless diversity of flora and fauna around every corner, this river is a professional and amateur photographer’s dream. Otters, Peccaries, Tapirs, Agoutis, Monkeys, and many other mammals can be seen, with the elusive Jaguar sometimes along the riverbanks, feasting on River Turtles etc. Birds of every shape, color and size can be seen everywhere throughout these watersheds and many species of Parrots are heard all day long fighting over space and territory. Toucans call to each other from the treetops like yapping puppies and Herons, Egrets, Kingfishers, Terns, and Ospreys frequent the riverbanks in search of fish.

We will head back to Piraiba Lodge with an Option to Experience one of our Outdoor Camps further Upriver.

She was born in a small village called Tipuri it is located in the upper Takutu-upper Essequibo region of Guyana. It was from my early years on a ranch that was surrounded by mountains, forest, and wildlife that my love and appreciation for our culture, environment and wildlife began.
